We have learned that Harry Webster had died on the 6th February at the grand old age of 89.
For over a decade in the 1950s and 60s Harry was Standard Triumph’s inspiring genius behind every model of Triumph car, and was the man responsible for discovering the styling master Giovanni Michelotti who designed the elegant lines of our cars.
Harry joined the Standard Motor Co. Ltd. as an apprentice back in 1932, and rose to become chief engineer in 1956, a position he held until 1968 when he moved to British Leyland as head of the design team. He did however remain a director at Triumph until 1970, and then became technical director at Automotive Products in Leamington Spa in 1973. He retired in the 1980s and then had time to meet with Triumph enthusiasts and clubs, appearing at many events and honouring us all in April 2000 by unveiling the S-T monument which was erected on the site of the old Canley works.
We all owe a Harry a great debt of gratitude for the excellent engineering and design he presided over during the development of our favourite cars. The Register offers its heartfelt condolences to Harry’s family.
